Ericsson Rides 7% Organic Sales Surge Amidst Major Asia Restructuring

STOCKHOLM — Ericsson has reported robust third-quarter results for 2026, with organic sales climbing by an impressive 7%, largely fueled by its Networks division. The Swedish telecommunications giant also announced a significant organizational overhaul, merging its two Asian market units into a single Asia-Pacific (APAC) entity and reorganizing its Enterprise Wireless Solutions.

The positive financial performance saw Ericsson’s shares jump as much as 11% in Stockholm on Thursday, marking their biggest intraday gain since January 23. This surge contributed to an 18% year-to-date rise, as the company’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization (EBITA) reached SEK 10.1 billion ($1 billion), comfortably exceeding analyst expectations of SEK 7.93 billion.

Strong Q3 Performance Amidst Strategic Shifts

Reported sales for the quarter stood at SEK 59.5 billion, an increase from SEK 56.2 billion in the same period last year. The 7% organic sales growth, which excludes the impact of acquisitions, divestments, and currency fluctuations, demonstrated strength across three of Ericsson’s four market areas. While adjusted EBITA was down from SEK 15.8 billion a year prior — a figure that included a substantial SEK 7.6 billion capital gain — the company indicated an increase in adjusted EBITA when this one-off gain was excluded. The adjusted EBITA margin for the quarter was 17.0%.

Despite the strong top-line growth, net income for the quarter decreased to SEK 5.8 billion from SEK 11.3 billion a year earlier. The company also generated SEK 4.9 billion in free cash flow before mergers and acquisitions, and allocated SEK 4.8 billion to share repurchases, reflecting confidence in its financial position.

New Leadership Navigates Future Headwinds

Per Narvinger, who recently stepped into the chief executive role this month, characterized the quarter’s figures as “strong.” His tenure begins as the company benefits from strategic cost-cutting and headcount reductions initiated by his predecessor, Börje Ekholm.

However, Narvinger also sounded a note of caution regarding the future. He warned that the Radio Access Network (RAN) market is expected to remain flat, geopolitical uncertainties persist, and rising component costs will present a significant headwind to gross margin in the coming year. Chief Financial Officer Lars Sandström added that Ericsson mitigated these higher costs in the short term through product development measures but plans to pass these costs onto customers once current contracts conclude. Narvinger also noted that some of the recent demand stemmed from customers accelerating purchases ahead of anticipated price increases.

Asia-Pacific Consolidation and Executive Realignment

In a move designed to simplify its operational structure and enhance focus, Ericsson announced a major reorganization set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The current Market Areas North East Asia and South East Asia, Oceania, and India will be consolidated into a single, unified Market Area Asia-Pacific (APAC).

Patrick Johansson, who currently leads Market Area Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), will take the helm of the new APAC unit. This change necessitates the recruitment of a new head for the EMEA market. Furthermore, the Enterprise Wireless Solutions business area will be dismantled, with its Neutral Host solutions and Ericsson Private 5G offerings integrating into the core Business Area Networks. The Wireless WAN segment will maintain its standalone status, reporting directly to Yossi Cohen, the head of Market Area Americas.

These organizational shifts will also impact Ericsson’s Executive Team. Three current members — Åsa Tamsons (head of Enterprise Wireless Solutions), Chafic Nassif (head of North East Asia), and Andres Vicente (head of South East Asia, Oceania, and India) — are slated to transition from their existing positions on December 31. Narvinger stated that these changes aim to create a “leaner and more balanced” Executive Team, better aligned with the company’s strategic priorities.

Narvinger emphasized that the restructuring is intended to sharpen Ericsson's focus on the critical Asian market and bolster its competitive stance against emerging threats, specifically citing Elon Musk’s Starlink, which he noted is increasingly challenging traditional telecom operators. This strategic positioning contrasts with rival Nokia, which has recently reoriented its focus toward networking equipment for AI data centers and is integrating Nvidia chips into its radio access networks, while Ericsson maintains its strategy as a pure-play supplier of equipment for telecom operators.
